This has probably been our first summer that felt less like I was “babysitting” my boys and more like we were “adventuring”. They are both now at the age where we don’t bring a stroller, we don’t need to pack a million snacks, we don’t change diapers–we just go…and do (sometimes at a moment’s notice). We’ve had beach days and farm days and picnic days and lake days and lazy days. And we have had an absolute blast bringing our Fujifilm Instax Mini 8 camera along for the ride to capture our adventures.

One of our favorite things to do this summer was to create crafts using mementos from our adventures. We made foraging baskets to collect shells on our beach trips. We decorated and painted sticks we collected from a picnic. We started collecting and polishing rocks we found on our hikes. And just the other day I designed these fun photo holders for the boys to keep their favorite pictures in. These ones are staying on our fireplace so I left them plain. But the boys have been painting some very colorfully to keep in their rooms.
This project is so simple! All you need are a few inexpensive supplies and 5-10 minutes, seriously!
Materials:
Floral wire
1-2 inch wooden cubes
Pushpin
Scissors or wire cutters
Photos
You can purchase wooden cubes in the unfinished wood section of your local craft store. However, they were out of stock when I went so I ended up at the hardware store. I grabbed a long square post (1 inch cubed) and I had them cut it down for me for only a few cents per cut. This is a great route to take if you are making a large quantity of photo holders.
Floral wire is very thin and easy to manipulate so you won’t have any trouble shaping it. First, I shaped a heart and left a long tail (10 inches) of excess wire on the end.
Then I followed the same step and made a second heart over the top of the first. I wrapped the end around the stem and cut off the excess wire.
Next, I used my pushpin to create a hole for the wire in the middle of my block.
Fit the wire into the hole; add a photo and then you’re done! I told you that was a cinch!
On my next round of these I am going to color block them with acrylic paint in fun colors. I can’t wait to see how they turn out. Other great ways to utilize this DIY:
- wedding place cards
- centerpieces
- display your favorite quotes
- church craft activity
- baby shower favors
