The moment Ashley (my baby) told me she was going to have a baby went nothing like I had always imagined it would go. I always imagined I would be old and gray on that day.
Likely retired on a front porch swing somewhere exotic, probably Greece.
But here I was, 48 years old, still in the prime of my life and career…
and somewhere in the excitement of her announcement I went numb,and all I could think was,
I’m too old to be a Grandma.
I’m a Momma, not a grandma.
Don’t get me wrong.
I was thrilled they were going to have a baby.
I knew they were ready to start a family. I knew they were going to be wonderful, loving parents.
I was ready for them to be parents.
I just wasn’t ready to feel as old as “Grandma” sounded.
I spent 9 months thinking up different ways to say Grandmother…
Yia Yia, Nana, G-Ma, Grannie, Grammy, Bubbie, Nanny. But they all still made me feel OLD!
I talked to everyone I knew hoping to discover some cute new way to make Grandmother sound younger, but nothing.
Then one day, a dear friend and proud grandma of 9, told me that it wasn’t up to me to pick the name my grandchildren would call me…
They would decide that for themselves.
And she was right.
Lil W has selected his name for me. And when we’re together, he says it over a hundred times.
And bless his heart, it’s not Grandma. Not even close.
It’s MONKEY. Yes, I’m serious.
And as silly as it sounds, when he calls my name at the park, I couldn’t be more proud to be Monkey.
So now my time with Lil W sounds something like this…
Monkey walk. Monkey hand. Translation: (Grandma, Please take me on another walk, Grandma, I will hold your hand)
Monkey huwy huwy. Translation: (Grandma, hurry, go faster before the trucks leave)
Monkey twuck. Translation: (Grandma, look at every passing, moving or parked truck on the face of the earth and say wow with me)
Monkey bus. Translation (Grandma, look at every passing, moving or parked bus on the face of the earth and say wow with me)
Monkey bubbles. Translation: (Grandma, Please put lots of bubbles in my bath tub)
Monkey dwink. Translation: (Grandma, Please let me have some of your soda but don’t tell Mommy)
So that’s it. I’m Monkey. And can you believe it, I don’t just like it. I love it.

That is too sweet. My mother became a grandmother at a young age too. She was 47 when we welcomed our first son and she couldn’t stand the thought of a “granny” name so my boys call her Honey. Her and my dad are Honey and Pops so we like to joke that they sound a lot like cereal 🙂

My daughter calls my mother Monkey also!!! How strange and cool is that!! My daughter was going through a Lion King phase and began calling her Monkey. Now with 3 more grandchildren from my siblings, they all call her Monkey. People always looks at us strange when they hear what she is called, but my mom always smiles with pride!!

I read LMM’s blog daily but don’t comment all the time. This post definetly caught my attention though! When I was a little girl and too young to say Grandma I began calling my Grandmother GaGa and it just stuck-and I don’t think she minded one bit-just like you 🙂

I love that he found his name for you!! My mother-in-law refuses to go by grandma (her youngest son has taken to calling her granny just to bug her). So, my nephew refers to her as Mema.. On the other side, my nieces call my mom and dad Grandma and Grandpa Achilles (the name of their dog). I can’t wait to see what my little one will call her grandparents 🙂

My 2 year old calls her grandparents Ammy (Grammy is too hard) and B-Dada (Bang Bang Dada – he was building a house when the grandkids were babies, and the nickname stuck). And the other set is Nana Lu (My mom is Luci) and Pee Pee! (Pepere).
I love that they have their own little names for everyone, so sweet and innocent even if it is embaressing out in public. I have to say I’m SO glad my name is Momma and not Pee Pee 🙂

How cute is that!? Wonder how he came up with it… ? 🙂 My mom’s mom has always been GRANNY. To everyone. I don’t think 90% of my friends ever knew her real name. They just all called her Granny. My dad’s mom is Nana. As in Nana and Papa. Now my mom is Nana and my dad is Papa. Can’t wait for my kids to give them their own names.

I call my grandma Nana. Always have probably always will, no matter how old I get! My kids on the other hand call my mother Nonni. She was 37 when she became a grandma and like you felt too young for “grandma”!

I love hearing names of the grandparents:) It is true, the child will pick out the name! My husband used to call his grandma, honey. I attribute it to his grandpa calling after her and my hubs heard it. My mom goes by “ama” I think because I call my mom, “ma” and my husbands mom is gaga. That was EXCELLENT advice from your friend! My whole family had our nicknames picked out when my nephew was born…As soon as he could talk Papa went to Poppy, Grammy went to Mimi & Auntie L went to Mitz lol. But they’re perfect for us! I think it creates an extra special bond 🙂

My kids picked (mostly) their grandparents names, too. We have great grandparents in the mix, too, so they had to come up with names for those. But for my husband’s parents, they insisted on grandma/grandpa lastname. Very formal 🙁

For a little while my niece called my mom Baca and we have no idea where it came from. Just as quickly as it started she stopped and started calling her Grandma though. On my dads side of the family my grandfather is from cajun Louisiana so we called our grandparents Maw Maw and Paw Paw. I remember when I was younger telling my grandma I couldn’t call her Maw Maw anymore because I thought it was spelled Mama and had just learned that four letter words were bad and can still hear her in her Texas accent say well thats okay honey because it’s Maw Maw (the w sounded like dubya though)

How precious! I called both my grandmother’s “grandma”. I made my mom a grandma at 35 and she hated it. The kids call her “Grandma Diane”. My son made me a grandmother at 36. I’m called “Mama Salena” by my grandaughter and my oldest grandson is confused and keeps calling me “Aunty”. lol. When they call you whatever they choose it’s the cutest thing. =)

So so so cute! My mom had a difficult time deciding on what “grandma” name she wanted. She tossed around Oma, Nana, Nanny, etc. but my son decided it for her. My kids now call her “Birdie” since at the time, she lived on a street called Birdies Roost.

My grandma was Nanny. She was a grandmother at 35. I didn’t have a say, but I think she was ready to embrace her grandmother-hood. My mom is Gigi. She was a grandma at 42 and wasn’t ready to embrace her inner grandma. She spent months agonizing over what her name would be, and my sister finally settled on Gigi for her.
Seeing some of these just make me laugh. A close friend’s mother is Monkey also. She went with grandma for nearly two years before K started calling her Monkey. I also saw a Honey up there, and that is my boss’s grandma name. Too cute.

What a sweet story! My kids call my mom “Grammy”…it’s a southern thing my mom and I used to hear kids yell with a southern twang when we live in GA. Years later, when I had my daughter, the name Grammy resurfaced. It’s a sweet reminder of our relationship and a cute private joke about our time together in GA.

My Gramma had a complex when I had children (making her a great grandma in her 60s) so she decided to go with “Gigi” (as in G-Great G-Grandma). Our kids also call their great aunts “Granty”. We never put names on the kids grandparents, we let the grandparents chose. But I love that your little guy named you. How sweet is that? Something special for sure.

My oldest started calling my parents Ma Maw and Bampa and they stuck, she still does it because she says she doesn’t want to be boring and call them the norm, shes 10. My husbands parents are called Grandma and Grandpa and that’s okay because that suits their personalities to a tee. My youngest is 3 and she refers to our parents as mommy’s Wa Wa and daddy’s wa wa or mommy’s Bampa and daddy’s Bampa. Whenever my husband says Grandma, I correct him to say Wa Wa, because it is too cute and I want it to stick for life.

Aww! Precious post and photo! 🙂 My mom was 48 when I had my son- her first grandchild (and I thought my Mommy was young to be a Grandma, too). 🙂 She is called Omie (German for Grammy). My Grammy (my mom’s mom) is now called GG (great-grammy) by my son. We picked out these names and now he is 2 3/4 years old and calls them both these. 🙂

I became a grandma at 48 as well. Funny how each of us feels different about the new “phase” of our life when it happens though. I look pretty young and just love it when my 5 yr. old grandson calls me Grammy in publinc now and people do a double take and tell me that I look way too young to be a grandma!! Ha!
But, my favorite example of names for grandma is the one my grandson uses for his Great-grandma (my mom-in-law), When he was about a year old, the extended family went camping together for a week. Due to a change in what felt “normal” to him, he would often have a hard time settling down for his nap or bed time at night. My MIL loved having the opportunity to be able to walk around the campground and rock him to sleep in her arms. As she did this she would be humming in a “la-la’-la-la” fashion. Well, when he got back home he was too young to say “grandma” and kept saying “la-la” whenever he saw her, etc. He is now 5 years old and she is lovingly refered to as “Grandma LaLa”. She signs his cards that way and absolutely LOVES the nickname. As other great grandchildren join the family we know that this is going to be carried over to all of them.

I don’t have kids but I do have 3 beautiful nieces!! And they call my parents: Papa Nick and Gamma Sally <3 and let me tell you my parents became grandparents in their late 40's also and love every minute!!

I call my Grandma “Grammy.” I’m the only one of her 12 that call her that. It’s our special thing. My mom, also went through the same stage as you were saying…feeling too young to be a Grandma in your 40s. Anyways…my aunt goes by ‘Grandma Darling’. Ever since her grandchildren were babies she would call them ‘darling’ thus the name Grandma Darling came about. Note: her last name is not Darling 🙂 Ohh… I think its so cute.
I know its far, far away from now, but my fav name for a great grandma is GG. MY grandma was super excited and loved the name GG when she new she was going to be a great grandma.

That is SO precious! I had a regular “grandma” and I had a “Gaga.” She was supposed to be called “Granny” but in my toddler voice, it came out Gaga. And it stuck and got shortened to Gog, and all of the following grandchildren called her that, too. And she was the BEST and I miss her so very much!

Very cute nickname! My living grandmother I have always called Grandma and My grandmother who passed away about five years ago, we also called her Nina. She refused to be called grandma. Same with my mother, our kids call her Mimaw. =D

When my little girl was about 2 she called my father-in-law Pawkus. We have no idea where she came up with it, but it stuck. She is now 10 years old and loves to hear how she called grandpa pawkus years ago.
My little boy at the age of 2 called my mother popper…he is now 6 years old and to this day- she is still his popper!! I think it is awesome that little ones choose a term of endearment all on their own!! Gotta love those little minds…always learning, and teaching us something.

Isn’t it funny how kiddos will name you themselves. I call my grandmother, Grams. my son calls my mom Nana. I’ve been teaching him Nana Angel, because my mom passed away and she’s his angel and my mother in law is Meme.
What’s funny to me is my neices and nephews call me Gigi. I think they got that from people calling me Jenn-Jenn…or maybe just how my oldest nephew said jennifer. No matter how he came up with it I LOVE it.

My grandparents were Gram (long a- named by my oldest cousin) and Pop Pop, Grandmom Ruth & Pop Pop, & Nana. When my parents found out they were going to be grandparents ( at 44 & 46) my Dad insisted on being Pop Pop (why break tradition I guess) & my in laws insisted on being Nana & Papa. My mom on the other hand was said Grandma would be fine with her but my son (25 months) has now named her Gagga (not to be confused with Gaga- like Lady Gaga) & she loves it!

Awe! Adorable! I’ve always called my Grandparents by Grandma (last name) or Grandpa (last name). When my son was born we always called our parents Grandma (first name) or Grandpa (first name). I think using last names sounded too formal and detached and also I had 2 step parents at the time, so my 4 parents had 4 different last names! (Way to confuse a kid!) Over time my step-mom has become “Nana-DC” (her name is Denise) and my step-dad is “Ba-Bob” (his name is Bob), and my Grandpa is “Grumps” (although he’s not grumpy at all!). I think Monkey is totally adorable though!

When my grandson was born, my plan was to be Grammy. He had other plans, and I’ve been Nam for almost 9 years now. It has stuck, and I love hearing it from him, as well as his brother and sister. I always tell people the same thing–don’t worry about what you WANT to be called, your grandchild will decide what you WILL be called, and you’ll love it!

I used to call my grandma ammiii and granddad was afi. I also called grandma an old lady because in this book that she used to read to me there was an old lady that made pan cakes, grandma wasn’t that old, but she is a lady and makes super can cakes.
My little half sister calls my grandma amma nammi meaning candy in Icelandic because she always got a bit of chocolate when she came for a visit.

I called my grandmothers grandma. But I had one “Grandpa” and one “Pop”. Everyone called Pop that because that was his name. I’ve only heard my Aunt call him “Daddy” but it wasn’t because my father and uncle didn’t call him “Dad” they just said “Pop” instead.

I became a “meanie” at 39! At first I was in complete shock, I was afterall WAY TOO young to be a grandmother. Then I had a dream, a little blonde headed boy was tugging on my pant leg, “saying Meanie Meanie pick me up”. Then my daughter had a beautiful blonde baby boy and I became Meanie. One of the happiest days of my life!

Hahaha! That is AWESOME! Monkey is my son’s nickname. My mom is also a young grandma. She was barely 43 when I had my daughter (now 5 years) and 48 when I had my son (3 months). She is Nana to my kiddos and MY grandma is Grandma to me and GG (for Great Grandma) to my kids. 🙂

We always called my dad’s parents by their first names; Harriette and Warren. Apparently others think that is strange, but it was normal to us!

When I was kid, my dance teacher’s grandma worked at the front desk of the dance studio. My teacher called her Gram and so did everyone else. My mom always loved that and was determined that she would be “Gram” to my kids. My 3 year old added her spin to it and calls her “Grammie”. I love it.
The oldest grandson (now 18) started calling my dad “Bucca Bucca”. We’re not sure where it came from but it stuck. We’re a blended family so everyone has more than their fair share of grandmas and grandpas, so the nicknames help to differentiate the grandparents.
I also laugh b/c my step-mom calls herself “Pretty Granda Rita”. She says you stop getting the good presents if you try to call her just Grandma Rita. Every card we get is signed “Bucca” and “PGR”. I recently saw an email that she received from her niece. I laughed when it was addressed to “PAR” (Pretty Aunt Rita!!). Apparently she’s been doing this for years. 🙂

My daughter for some reason could say Grandma, but not Grandpa. So, she started calling the Grandpa’s – Papa. My dad loves it. I don’t think my Father in law loves it as much. She also started calling the grandma’s by what they have at their house. She calls my mom, the Grandma with the trampoline. And my mother in law is Grandma with Brownie (the dogs name)

I think the fact that he calls you monkey is so adorable. When I was pregnant I asked my mother what she wanted to be called and she settled on Grammie but low and behold she’s not Grammie to my little man. He calls her MiMi even though we always said Grammie. I guess that just goes to show that they do pick their own names. Before my gram passed away Riley called her GG (short for Great Grammie) and it truely fit her. We now remember her in our hearts but he always says “GG got it” in reference to a little bear she gave me for Ry before he was born. They truely are blessings!

When I was little my grandma would jokingly tell me if I was being silly that she’d “bop me”. I started calling her “Boppy” and the name stuck.
When we told our parents we were expecting our first they were so excited to pick out grandparent names. We had an understanding that if the grandchild came up with a different name, we’d defer to the child. But Lolli & Papa and Grammie & GranDaddy have stuck for now. Grammie has to wear a walking cast now, and when my son (he is 2) saw her he dubbed her “Grammie Robot”. We are definitely getting a kick out of that!!

I made my mother a grandmother at 42. She was not ready. My daughter named her MumMum. All the grandkids still call her that and 20 years later she still doesn’t answer to grandma! 😉

My Grandma was born and raised in Hawaii. She called her Grandma ‘Tutu’, which means Grandma in Hawaiian. My Dad called his Grandma ‘Tutu’ and now my sister and I call our Grandma ‘Tutu’ as well! Our Grandpa is ‘Papa’. It was so easy for all of their grandchildren to call them ‘Tutu & Papa’ 🙂
