3 Ways to Wear a White Button Up Shirt

February 19, 2013

3 ways to wear a white button up shirt

The classic white button-up shirt has been my go-to for as long as I can remember. My fashion foundation. My old faithful. My sure thing. Between juggling a baby and a toddler, I don’t often get the chance to spend as much time as I would like putting together my outfits, so the white button-up’s versatile nature has become an essential piece to my wardrobe. You can dress it up, dress it down, layer over it, layer under it, or even tuck it in. And of course, as a busy Momma of messy boys, I insist that my clothes be machine washable (none of this dry clean only business). Which means I do a lot of laundry around these parts. And I mean a lot. If you’ve seen my furniture (and now knowing how often I wear white button-up shirts), then you can understand why I’m always on the hunt for a detergent that will make my whites as bright as possible. I was recently given the chance to try Tide Pods, the only 3-chamber unit dose of detergent on the market. It’s a powerful 3-in-1 detergent that cleans, brightens, and fights stains. I already use Tide detergent, but I had never tried the Tide Pods before. And after I learned that just one removes more stains than 6 caps of the liquid bargain brand (based on stain removal performance of one pac of Tide Pods vs. 6 doses of the leading liquid bargain brand base variant in a standard top loading machine), I knew I would be hooked. And I was right! I threw my white shirt into the washer (covered in a lovely sneeze from my 6 month old baby) and it came out looking cleaner and brighter than ever.

Here are three different ways I like to style my bright white button-up. Be sure to visit the end of this post to enter a sweepstakes for a chance to win a $100 Visa Gift Card. And now, on to the looks: SPORTY/CASUAL This is my every day “mom uniform,” what I wear to run most of my errands. Boyfriend jeans, slip-on sneakers and a baseball cap are the perfect way to stay comfortable as an active and busy Mom. Also, the messy side-braid is a great way to disguise messy bed head.

LUNCH WITH THE GIRLS My girlfriends and I are pretty good about setting time out (away from the kids) to have lunch together in celebration of our birthdays. And on these days, I take off the ball-cap in favor of a little more feminine accessorizing–like this chunky statement necklace worn on the outside of my shirt. I also have fun layering sweaters and vests over a button up and pairing with colored denim (the possibilities really are endless). girls lunch 1 DINNER AND A MOVIE DATE NIGHT Ben and I don’t get the chance to sneak away for a date night all too often, so when we do I make sure I put on his favorite accessory–a pair of tall heels. I’m wearing another statement necklace in this outfit, however this time I’ve tucked it under the collar for a more subtle effect. It would be easy to pair this outfit with a blazer for those chilly evenings.   date night 2_edited-2

I think my colored jeans are versatile- I have them in red and bright blue. They can be worn casually, rolled up at the bottom, or tucked into boots with a blazer, or even paired with high heels and a cute blouse.

Hmm…something I love for multiple looks is probably a sparkly tank (but not TOO sparkly). I like to wear it by itself when the weather is hot in the summer and I want to look like I’m trying just a little, when the weather is a little chilly or windy with a wrap which adds sleeves and a little extra layer or for a bit of dressy I will put a cardigan on top or a funky jacket. It can be dressed up with a long strand of beads for a necklace, other large accent necklaces or a simple chain.

Leggings!!! They are my go-to, rain or shine, summer or winter favorite. In the summer, I throw on a pair of cute sandals or wedges and a tank top for the days I’m too lazy to shave my legs. In the fall and spring they’re great with a cute sweater or shirt/cardigan combo and heels…although I’m more of a cozy sweater kind of girl. And in the winter, I pair them with boots. Either Ugg-style with a big slouchy sweatshirt (I’m all about cozy) or with cute riding-style boots and some layers. Maybe even a dress if I’m feeling ambitious.

My black turtleneck- it’s a thin, soft t-shirt material, which allows me to wear it on it’s own with jeans, under sweaters (I live in Wisconsin!) or over a sift dress to make that into a skirt!

I, too, have several versatile pieces because I like being creative with my looks, trying new styles, and saving money with items I can wear lots of ways! Recently, a go-to piece has been my denim jacket. The best part about mine is that I’ve had it for years, just hoping it would come into fashion again. And it has in a big way. I’ve worn mine with all kinds of dresses and skirts: summer maxis, shorter & more tailored fits, and used it to make a more formal dress more casual. In slightly warmer weather I wear it with colored shorts with the sleeves rolled up for a dressed down look; I wear it with colored jeans and a white top, black jeans and any color top, or crazy printed jeans or leggings as the balance piece. And, I have worn it to work successfully as business casual attire; black slacks and a sweater look great under a basic denim jacket. It’s all about how you accessorize! Try it out!

Gotta be my white long sleeve layering tee. I can put it over a lace bottomed tank or put it under a cardigan/belt duo. Sometimes I cover it with a vest, Jean jacket, or just another colored layering tee. A must have for this mom -on-the-go!

My tall, slouchy brown boots. In fall, winter and spring these are my go to shoes. They are comfortable and super versatile. I pair them with dresses, skirts and bare legs, leggings, sweaters and slouchy sweatshirts and my normal and colored jeans. They literally go with anything and I can walk miles in them. They are starting to wear out so the Visa gift card would be a huge help in finding a suitable replacement when these fall apart. They are a staple in this busy girl’s lifestyle!

Love love love those black and gold booties!! Where can I get my hands on a pair?!

My go to is definitely something coral pink. I can dress that colour up and down and criss cross. I have a coral linen top I got for 2 dollars at my local Mango and it goes nicely tucked into my tailored silk skirts, great with my overly faded denim shorts and even on the beach for a quick cover up.

It is amazingly comfortable but still looks classic. I wear it with jeans leggings yogas and any top underneath it. But just in case you want me to pick a second thing since my to go item matches yours I’d say black skinny jeans as I can wear them with longer jackets on casual Friday for work, and then rock them on the weekends too!

I have several pieces that I think are versatile, but I love a nice black t- shirt. Pair it with a ankle khakis and flats for a day of errand running, a pair of jeans and sweater for casual and then a cute skirt or dress pants, accessories/ blazer for a work outfit.

Leggings are definitely my go to. I can throw them on with a flannel and combat boots, put them under a dress if it is chilly outside, wear them to workout in, or even put them on with a large sweatshirt when I am not feelin’ it. There are so many different ways to wear leggings and the best part is, they are SO comfortable!

After having kids, it is rare I find myself shopping anywhere but Target or Forever 21. However, on a fateful day two years ago with my mom and sister in town, I found myself perusing the Banana Republic clearance rack. And that’s when I saw it for $3.97. It is a turquoise jewel-tone cotton knit maxi skirt. It is as comfy as sweats, but makes me feel oh so chic in the 2 seconds it takes to throw on. And here are the three ways I wear it. I can pull up the waist to my bust and belt it, throw on some statement earrings and cowboy boots. I am instantly ready for girls’ night out or date night! If I need to put on something to run around town and do errands, I put on my trusty skirt with a tank top, sandals and a long necklace. Voila! Comfy as sweats, but way cuter! And to head to church I can dress up my skirt with a fun printed scarf and shawl cardigan. The best part about that, is when I get home to flip pancakes for Sunday brunch, I just throw back on my tank top and sandals and I am ready for a cozy Sunday with my hubby and kiddos! Even two years later this skirt is still in style. I just wish I had kept track of how many times I have worn it to do a cost per wear. At $3.97, I have definitely gotten my monies worth!

My fave 3-in-1 thing in my closet is a white tank dress i have. I can wear it alone or belted for casual warm days. I wear it as a slip under things that need a bit more coverage. Or I tuck it into a skirt and it doesn’t look like a dress at all! voila! the perfect 3-in-1
