WHAT I THOUGHT:
Charming yet predictable…
After seeing The Maid awarded Goodread’s Choice Award for Best Mystery/Thriller of 2022, I decided to give it a read. I enjoyed this “whodunit” well enough, but I most certainly would not consider it the best mystery/thriller of the year–not even in my top 10.
It’s not often that I read a novel, adore the characters but only semi-enjoy the book. The characters were quirky, lovable, diverse and well developed, but still I found myself yawning my way through an often all-too-predictable plot line. The first several chapters were especially slow for me but it started to pick up halfway through.
The Maid is a good choice for those looking for a PG-rated, feel-good “thriller”. I was hoping for more twists and turns, keepings me guessing until the very last page.
